Teeth grinding, otherwise known as bruxism, can be caused by stress, hyper-activeness, or a misalignment of the teeth or jaw. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching can cause varying degrees of pain and discomfort. These habits can also weaken teeth and cause chipping and wearing. If left untreated, teeth grinding can lead to an eventual breakdown of the teeth, jaw pain, headaches, loss of sleep, and other TMJ disorders.

Dental mouth guards and splints can relieve pain, discomfort, and wear caused by teeth grinding and jaw clenching. That said, let’s go over some easy steps you can take to prevent cold sores from bugging you!

1) Get plenty of sleep - Ok, that seems to be the answer to everything doesn’t it!?! However, getting a good night’s rest is a huge step in making sure your body doesn’t get worn out and you keep your stress levels to a minimum. You don’t have to get 12 hours of sleep each night - just be sure you give yourself enough time to get a good sleep each night!

2) Use a Moisturizer or Chapstick - Keeping your lips and the skin around your mouth well moisturized makes a huge difference in the amount of cold sores you get. Make sure you always carry some chapstick or lip balm with you as dry lips are a breeding ground for cold sores.

3) Use sunblock when you are out in the sun - This is a step that many people miss. UV rays can be a big factor in causing cold sores, so it’s important to protect your skin against these rays. If the sun’s out, make sure to put some sunblock on around your lips!

4) Wash your hands frequently - It’s possible that certain types of bacteria or irritants are partially to blame for your cold sores. It’s normal to touch your mouth and face throughout the day, so try to keep your hands clean so that you aren’t transferring any bacteria to your skin. It’s a great idea to carry around a anti-bacterial handwash with you that you can use when you aren’t close to a sink.

It has been given some other names like crusta lactea, milk crust, honeycomb disease etc. The area that the disease affects becomes yellowish, patchy, greasy, and scaly. It generally occurs on the scalp of a newborn baby.

Places like the nearest side of ear, the eyebrows and the eyelids are the commonest among the areas where this skin condition occurs. However, it may occur in other parts of the body as well. In this case, it is known more as seborrheic dermatitis than as cradle cap. In most of the cases, the disease is rather mild in rare cases it can be severe.

The exact reason behind cradle cap has not been defined properly. This is probably because the disease is harmless and do not irritate the baby in any way. So, it is not thought to be necessary to make extensive research on its cause. Moreover, the disease disappears within a few years, two to three years, even without any serious treatment.

Yet, research made on the real cause behind cradle cap has come out with various consequences with the result that dermatologists are not unanimous on this issue. Some of them opine that the disease is caused by over active sebaceous glands in the skin of the baby. These glands are passed to the baby from her mother and remain active in the baby s circulation.

There are other dermatologists who opine that cradle cap has something to do with skin yeasts known as Malasezia furfur. A third group of specialists believe that the skin condition occurs due to immature digestive system of the baby. The digestive system of a newborn cannot absorb sufficient biotin and other vitamins of the B-complex hence the disease occurs.

The reason for this is the need for more anesthesia which during the procedure is not an issue since it is countered with the injection of adrenaline, however if you are above the requirements a surgeon may decline to perform the procedure on you. Over time the technology of liposuction has gotten better and with it the risks are now lower, but unfortunately there are still some people who may have too much fat cells to undergo a procedure. Because of this fact, a new technique was developed called the ultrasonic liposuction. In this new procedure it is now safer for a person who was declined a liposuction previously to now be able to qualify.

Just as any other form of liposuction, it should not be used as a means to loose weight and in general is done as a means of liposculpture. It is capable of producing better results in the re-sculpturing of the underlying fat cells to give a patient a more defined figure.

In ultrasonic assisted liposuction the patient will undergo general anesthesia and will have a series of small incisions made in which to insert the suction tubes. In the event that larger amounts of fat cells are required to be removed from your abdominal region, the surgeon may ask for you to donate some of your own blood in case you may need during or after the surgery. The surgeon may also give you a prescription for iron supplements as they too may be needed during the procedure.

After the completion of the procedure, the surgeon will then stitch up the small incisions and place a compression wrap around your abdominal area which needs to stay in place for no more than 1 month. After this time period is complete the patient may remove the wrap and in general the recovery period is considered to be complete. The length of time the wrap will be needed may vary depending on the circumstances surrounding the procedure and you should consult the surgeon for more information regarding the recovery process after receiving a ultrasonic assisted liposuction.

Yes, that s right you can improve your health simply by stepping outdoors. Close your eyes and visualize with me, if you will (ok, close one eye use the other one to read along!). Cardinals and blue jays are flitting about, calling to each other. The recycling bin needs to go down by the street…wait a minute! Don t look at that. We re focusing on nature, here. OK, back to it. The sky is blue, with a few puffy clouds floating by. Take a deep breath. And another. Walk out into the yard and simply look around at all nature has to offer. Continue breathing deeply and see if you can spot something small yet wondrous you may have not noticed before - baby lizards scampering in the grass or some new flower buds ready to burst open.

Once you ve fully explored your backyard, take a seat and continue to relax. You may want to get a glass of lemonade (or cocoa, depending on the weather) to sip while you relax, clearing your mind of everything but you and your place in the world. Remember, this is a time to let the stress of the day go - not to rehash your anxieties. Think about the various muscles in your body, tensing them and then letting them relax as fully as possible. Is it warm outside? Use a fan or misting hose to keep you cool as you relax into the arms of the air and nature around you. Is it chilly out? Dress more warmly and light up your chiminea or outdoor fireplace. Pondering the flickering flames is a great way to unwind.

For many of us, getting all sweaty with exercise does not sound at all appealing as a way to unwind and de-stress at the end of a busy workday or week. Doing something, however, is necessary. You may not have to jog 5 miles to get in the right mindset to let your hair down - simply getting outside and enjoying what s around you can do the trick.

Even the most congested of urban cities has some “green space” for residents to enjoy. These crystals generally occur because uric acid is created from purine. Therefore, a gout diet low in purines help to reduce the likelihood of uric acid forming an excess, which will cause it to be turned in the crystals. Since you re body cannot properly get rid of the uric acid, it has to be deposited somewhere - and that s where it crystallizes into your joints.

So how do you design a diet for this particular health condition? First, get rid of foods that are high in purine. Two of the biggest purine causing elements are alcohol, beer especially, and asparagus.

What you basically want to do is limit your intake of foods that are high in protein and stay away from alcoholic beverages, sardines, anchovies, gravies, sweetbreads and so forth.

unable to help at the scene of an accident. According to a recent survey
conducted for the British Red Cross and Toyota by the Children s Forum, 60%
of children lack the knowledge to be able help themselves and others at the
scene of a road accident. The children surveyed were between 9 and 13 years
old, the age range most at risk of injury on the road. Over 1,800 children in
this group are killed or seriously injured in road accidents every year, and
many lives could be saved if first aid is given before the emergency services
arrive. Schoolchildren are eager to turn this around, with 94% of them
wanting to learn more about first aid.

In an article in The Scotsman last month, Dr Robert Stewart calls for
primary school pupils to be taught the principles of first aid and accident
prevention as a lesson in the classroom.

“From an early age, children should be taught how to call an ambulance in an
emergency and give a clear message on the telephone. Recently, we had the
example of a young child telephoning for help when her diabetic mother was
having a low blood-sugar crisis.

When children play with their friends beyond the range of adults, accidents
can happen and simple first aid measures can be vital or even life-saving.
Bleeding is frightening, and its arrest is important. Children should know
how to press firmly on a bleeding wound and elevate it above the heart.”

In another recent survey conducted by the Red Cross, 90% of 1,960 adults
questioned believed that first aid should be a compulsory lesson in school.
Simple first aid techniques such as tilting back the head of an unconscious
person could save a life.

The dramatic increase in knife crime reported over the last year has led to
some inner city schools installing metal detectors in a bid to prevent knives
being carried into school. Would school children know what to do if faced
with a knife injury?

The survey shows that only 42% of 11 to 14 year olds would know how to treat

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. First of all, we would have to define middle age and take into account all sorts of influential factors before reaching a conclusion. Secondly, depression can occur as a result of life circumstances such as divorce, redundancy, relationship problems, as well as genetics, environment and health, or for no apparent reason at all. Depression can also occur at any age, regardless of background, culture or socio-economic status.

No one knows exactly why some people develop depression and others don t but what is known is that it is a worldwide problem. According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 450 million people have a mental health problem. Now, a recent research study has indicated that we are indeed more likely to become depressed during middle age than at any other time of our lives.

The Study - “Is Well-Being U-Shaped over the Life Cycle”

This study, the biggest of its kind ever undertaken, is soon to be published in the highly respected journal Social Science and Medicine . The results have highlighted that we are most likely to be unhappy during middle age. In fact, the most likely age to become depressed in the UK was 44 regardless of gender, whereas in the US there was a gender difference in that it was 50 years of age for men and 40 for women.

The study conducted by researchers from Warwick University in the UK and Dartmouth College in the USA involved more than two million people and included data from 80 different countries. What the results showed was that irrespective of wealth, status or gender, no matter if you had children or not, whether you were divorced, married or single, the pattern was consistently the same.

Our happiness levels peak in our 20 s and then dips dramatically during middle age only to rise again in later years. Why this should be the case is not known although the researchers suggest that it is something that happens deep within the human being and touched on possible theories.

For example, perhaps when we are young the world is our oyster so to speak and we feel we can do or be anything we want, whereas in mid life, a sort of reality check takes place where we realise that our life s ambitions may never take place and we have to redefine our goals and aspirations. If we can accept who we are and our own limitations then we will get through it relatively unscathed. Later in life we may well find that we have experienced loved ones and friends dying and are just happy to still be around. Finally, as happier people live longer lives, this could possibly have influenced the results.

Regardless, the results of this study would indicate that during the middle years of life, our feelings of well being and our mental health are not as good as they were or how they might be later in life. So what does this mean when we consider depression? Are people in middle age are more prone to depression? If so the news that it is perfectly normal to feel unhappy during this period may help some people to cope better during mid life. However, we must also be careful not to attribute real depression as something to expect just because we are in our forties or fifties.

Clinical Depression

Clinical depression can be described as persistent low moods and loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable to the extent that it interferes with our ability to carry out our normal daily routines. This is completely different to the low spirits or feelings of sadness that we can all feel from time to time but which passes after a short period. If you are clinically depressed then the feelings don t just go away.

Diagnosing depression can be problematic too as patients will often arrive at their doctor complaining of other problems such as joint aches and pains, headaches or stomach problems and are reluctant to admit to feeling depressed. Others may choose not to seek help at all. If we feel that life is a struggle when we reach our middle years and we are finding it difficult to cope on a day to day basis, we shouldn t be complacent about it and think it will just go away. Untreated depression can have serious consequences and should never be ignored or passed off as normal. The good news is that with support and professional help, depression is treatable no matter what age you are.

While the larger wrinkles can be smoothed out by the face lift the smaller ones cannot. The reason for this is that the larger wrinkles are not wrinkles at all, but they are more of folds. In general our facial skin floats freely over our fat and muscle cells, but it is attached in certain areas. As our skin ages and loosed elasticity, the parts where it is connected stay in place while the rest simply bulges out giving the appearance of what we commonly call a wrinkle.

The true wrinkles are those fine lines around the mouth and eyes and even the forehead where the skin has more than exceeded it elastic abilities. Not only can wrinkles be present here but also the skin can be cracked and ripped as well. To remove these you can get a chemical peel or other alternative, or you can have your surgeon do a laser resurfacing during the face lift. The laser resurfacing is like sand paper for your facial skin and smooths out the high spots leaving the lower spots. This makes a smooth finish that will eventually grow out even and the redness will disappear.

You cannot remove the wrinkles with a face lift alone, you need to have the :fine wrinkles” attended to since they are the only true wrinkles on our face. Once these have become resurfaced and the skin on your face has been tightened you will look years younger, both physically and mentally.

The reason for the numerous misconceptions that exist surrounding the subject is that the majority of people claiming expertise and making authoritative statements on the issue lack this understanding, as well as understanding of related concepts such as motor learning and skill transfer, and basic mechanical physics.

It is important to note that there are currently over fifty companies manufacturing a wide variety of selectorized machines, and the overwhelming majority of these are incorrectly designed. This article is only concerned with properly designed machines.

The purpose of performing an exercise is to fatigue or inroad the strength levels of the involved muscular structures to a meaningful degree to stimulate a growth mechanism. Ideally, this should occur within some minimum time frame to avoid using any more of the body s limited metabolic resources than necessary, since those same resources are required for recovery and growth. There are a variety of factors which affect how efficiently an exercise accomplishes this. Some of these include how well the resistance is balanced to the users strength in different positions over the range of motion, whether the targeted musculature is loaded directly, and how well the exercise facilitates focus and concentration on the targeted musculature.

Variable Resistance

A person s usable strength changes from position to position during any movement due to the effects of friction, myofibril congestion, virtual cam effects resulting from the changes in tendon insertion angles and other factors, as well as changes in leverage resulting from the changing angles of the involved bones during multi-joint movements. If we graph these changes in usable strength over the full range of motion of any particular exercise, we have what is referred to as the strength curve for that exercise.

The resistance provided by free weights or machines can also vary over the range of motion of an exercise due to changes in leverage or torque. This change in resistance over the range of motion is what is referred to as the resistance curve for that exercise.

Ideally, this resistance should vary in proportion to the strength curve of the involved muscular structures, increasing in positions where they are stronger and decreasing in positions where they are weaker. This makes it possible to meaningfully load the muscles continuously throughout the exercise and achieve the desired level of inroad with little or no energy wasted. The less wasted during exercise, the more available to the body afterwards for recovery and growth.

In free weight exercises involving rotation around a single joint such as barbell curls, dumbbell lateral raises, and dumbbell chest flies, the resistance curve resulting from the change in torque over the range of motion matches a portion of a sinusoidal curve (see figure A below). This does not match the strength curve for most rotary movements, however, which require an exponential decrease in resistance towards the end of the range of motion (see figure B below). While some free weight exercises can be performed in a manner in which the resulting resistance curve more closely approximates the strength curve of the involved muscles, perfect congruence is difficult, if not impossible to accomplish.

If the resistance provided by an exercise does not vary in proportion to the strength curve the amount of weight that can be used is limited to how much one is capable of handling in the position where the resistance is greatest. This is commonly known as the sticking point in free weight exercises. As a result, the involved muscular structures are only meaningfully loaded over a small portion of the range of motion of the exercise. During the rest of the exercise the relatively lower resistance allows the muscles a respite during which some motor units may recover more than if the muscles encountered meaningful resistance over the full range of motion. This reduces the rate of inroad resulting in less efficient growth stimulation.

In a properly designed machine a cam or system of levers varies the resistance over the full range of motion in proportion to the strength curve of the involved muscles, increasing it in positions where the muscles are stronger and decreasing it in positions where they are weaker. This provides continuously meaningful loading during the exercise, and inroads the muscles strength levels more efficiently. Less of the body s limited resources are wasted in the process of stimulating the muscles to grow, leaving more for recovery and growth.

The ideal resistance curve for nearly all single joint exercises as well as compound pulling exercises such as the bent-over barbell row, which require an exponential resistance decrease, can only be provided by a properly designed machine. In compound pushing movements, however, such as the squat and various presses, the relatively flat resistance curve provided by the near vertical movement of a barbell will provide a relatively balanced variation in resistance. Assuming that proper turnaround technique is used and lockout is avoided, these will load the muscles relatively efficiently.

Most compound pulling and rotary movements require an exponential resistance decrease over the last half of the movement.

Direct Resistance

In many barbell exercises the amount of resistance that can be used is limited by the strength of weaker intermediary structures, preventing the targeted muscular structures from being loaded as meaningfully as possible. In a properly designed machine, the resistance can be applied directly to the target muscles without going through a weak link, which allows them to be inroaded more efficiently.

A good example of this is the barbell squat. Although the barbell squat is a highly productive exercise it is not as effective as a properly designed leg press for targeting the musculature of the hips and thighs since it requires those muscles to be loaded through the weaker musculature of the low back. As a result the amount of weight one can handle in a barbell squat is limited by the strength of the lower back.

A properly designed leg press loads the muscles through the hips, so the weight that can be used is only limited by the strength of the hip and thigh muscles. While the barbell squat provides a greater amount of stimulation to the body as a whole due to the involvement of a larger amount of muscle, a leg press machine will provide greater growth stimulation for the musculature of the hips and thighs.

The muscles of the chest, back and shoulders can only be indirectly loaded through the weak links of the arm and grip muscles when using free weights. Direct resistance for these muscle groups is only possible with machines.

Balance

There is a common misconception that the need to balance a barbell, dumbbells or the body during free weight exercises requires greater muscular effort and provides more effective growth stimulation or growth stimulation to more of the body. This is not true, however, since very little muscular effort is required to balance something.

To balance an object is to keep it in a state of equilibrium, a state of rest produced by the mutual counteraction of two or more forces. For example, during a barbell bench press, the mutual counteraction of the the latissimus and deltoids prevents flexion or extension of the shoulder outside of a very narrow range, maintaining balance of the barbell over the shoulder joint throughout the movement. Since the load is being balanced upon the end of an effective lever which is almost perfectly vertical, even if the balancing force is being applied very close to the fulcrum (a mechanical disadvantage) the resistance or torque encountered at that point would be minimal.

The need for balance during free weight exercises is actually a disadvantage, since the skill of balancing an object or the body requires a certain amount of focus which detracts from one s ability to concentrate on contraction. By tracking muscle and joint function and eliminating the need to balance the resistance a machine allows for better concentration, and more intense contraction of the target musculature. Since there is no need to worry about losing one s balance or dropping a barbell or dumbbells, training to failure on a machine is also safer.

A related misconception is that the balance skills developed during the practice of free weight exercises transfer to other vocational or athletic activities. This is also not true. There is no positive transfer of balance skills from one activity to another. One can not improve their balance or any other skill in another activity by training with free weights. If you wish to improve your balance in the performance of a specific activity, the only way to do so is to practice that exact activity. To attempt to mimic an athletic or vocational activity while under load is neither an efficient way to exercise nor an effective means of improving skill in those activities.

Stabilization

Another common misconception is that it is necessary to perform free weight exercises in order to target certain stabilizer muscles. Realize that the term stabilizer is context dependent and refers to any muscle which acts to fix the position of one part of the body while other parts move. A muscle which acts as a stabilizer during one exercise acts as a prime mover or synergist during another. Although some muscles may be noticeably loaded while acting as stabilizers during certain exercises, such as those of the lower back during a bent-over barbell row, it is far more effective to target those muscles directly with exercises in which they are the prime mover. The involvement of a muscle as a stabilizer during either a free weight or machine exercise does not provide it with meaningful growth stimulation.
