Gout is a very specific type of arthritis which affects the muscle joints in a very painful way. This occurs when uric acid crystals develop within the joints and muscles, which causes swelling and intense pain when a person moves the joint where the crystals have been deposited.
These crystals generally occur because uric acid is created from purine. Therefore, a gout diet low in purines help to reduce the likelihood of uric acid forming an excess, which will cause it to be turned in the crystals. Since you re body cannot properly get rid of the uric acid, it has to be deposited somewhere - and that s where it crystallizes into your joints.
So how do you design a diet for this particular health condition? First, get rid of foods that are high in purine. Two of the biggest purine causing elements are alcohol, beer especially, and asparagus.
Naturally, it stands to reason that you do not want to have these in your diet if you are suffering from gout.
All sources of protein are supplements for purines in one form or another. Particularly, red and dark meat have the highest concentrations of purine as well certain seafoods. A reduction of meat consumption and seafood consumption is a good way to start when it comes to altering your diet.
Additionally, increasing your ingestion of vitamin C is another effective way to help with gout. This deals more with getting rid of excess uric acid in your body. However, do not start taking high doses of vitamin C until you have gotten permission from your doctor first.
Other foods that have been known to lower uric acid are charities and celery extracts - such as celery or celery seed in capsule form.
What you basically want to do is limit your intake of foods that are high in protein and stay away from alcoholic beverages, sardines, anchovies, gravies, sweetbreads and so forth.
Also, a good gout diet consists of having the proper amount of liquid intake to avoid dehydration. When your body is hydrated it will get rid of excess uric acid in your system through your urine. As with any diet, make sure you have medical supervision in place.
