The Complications of Liposuction

Files under Health and Fitness | Posted by admin

Liposuction, like other operations, carries a certain amount of risk with it, most notably the risk that complications may arise. This article will give you the basic information about these complications.

Infection. All surgical operations may result in infection, and liposuction is no different. Although doctors exert a lot of effort to keeping wounds as clean and bacteria-free as possible, infections still do occur. Infections can range from being mild to potentially life-threatening.

Edema. Swelling, also known as edema, can occur after liposuction. While most cases of edema are healed within a few days, in some cases it took weeks, even months, for the swelling to subside.

Puncture wounds. During liposuction, your surgeon is unable to see where the probing instrument is. Thus, it is possible to puncture and damage internal organs during the operation. Also known as visceral perforations, these puncture wounds can be fatal.
The damaged organs may require another surgical operation to be repaired.

Embolism. Embolism occurs when loosed fat enters the bloodstream and gather in the lungs, travel to the brain, and clog up blood vessels. If you experience shortness of breath after your operation, you may be suffering from embolism. Be sure to notify your doctor right away. Like visceral perforations, embolism can be fatal.

Imbalance in Fluids. Liposuction removes a lot of liquid from the body, which is why surgeons inject large amounts of fluids into the patient s body during the procedure. These fluids can cause the natural balance of fluids in your body go awry, resulting in lung and kidney problems.
