Every fall I go through the same scenario. It is just like clockwork. I wake up one day out of the blue and I feel like a forklift is sitting on my head. My whole body is sore and I can t get out of bed for the life of me. I feel cold, then hot and all around miserable.
Eventually I make it to the bathroom out of pure necessity, stumbling all the way there. Eyes swollen, nose running I try to wash my face thinking that it will wake me up and out of this stupor. I go to brush my teeth and the moment I open my mouth I know - sore throat time.
Having a sore throat is the worst and if you are really feeling sick there is little to no chance that you will venture out to get medicine. Whenever I have a sore throat, I am confined to the remedies I can put together in my kitchen.
Most doctors will tell you that a sore throat can be treated with home remedies. I am a big believer in hot tea and lozenges. I usually have a supply of hard candy or mints in my kitchen drawer that I jump into when my throat is sore. I try to keep hydrated by drinking lots of sugar-free liquids and I have found that turning on the humidifier can do a lot of good.
Many times a sore throat is caused by post nasal drip. I make sure to get rid of this irritant as well as I can and it usually helps a lot. Although there are many sprays and lozenges at your local
drugstore, many are too expensive for the amount of relief they provide. I have not yet found a throat spray that relieves the pain for more that a few minutes and before you know it, you have sprayed your throat so many times that you have a belly full of medicine.
The next time you have a sore throat, try using the home remedies that your mom used to use. Get yourself some hot tea with
lemon or a cup of hot soup. Fill up on liquids that will keep your throat moist while also flushing the infection or virus from your system. You will have to give it time because most sore throats will run on their own time frame and be gone when they are good and ready.
