Historically, depression has been called Melancholia or “black bile”. It was thought that depression was a chemical imbalance of the brain, particularly transmitters. During the 1950 s, tests found the presence of Risperine that isoiazed in changing monomine neurotransmitter levels and had an effect on symptoms of depression. There was also some thought that there were other causes of depression.

One thought was that the cause might be organic or hereditary. The basic premise for this is that the environment could be responsible. Basic Biology could also be responsible as well. Some thinking says that both may play a part in depression.

There is something called Seasonal Effective Disorder. As its name infers, it is a seasonal disorder that occurs when the days are shorter and darker. The depression in these cases can be treated with medication but there is also treatment called Bright Light Therapy.

Deficiencies in the diet may play a part in this. In today s world of processed foods and over-farmed produce, there is a serious lack of Omega 3 fatty acids. They are fats but they are beneficial to healthy brain function and retinal health. It may help in other conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and ADD/ADHD. They may also play a part in relieving inflammatory diseases. Omega 3 s may also benefit Macular Degeneration and other visual problems as well as Alzheimer s.

Alcohol and other drugs can affect depression. Alcohol, Benzodiazipine based tranquilizers, and sleep medications have been known to affect the length and the depth of your depression. It is always best to consult with your doctor or pharmacist to be certain whether you need to avoid alcohol and other drugs while taking an antidepressant.

Life experiences are thought to be a major influence on depression either as a cause or as a contributor to depression that may already be present in someone. These experiences can include job loss, sexual abuse (child &amp adult), divorce, ongoing stress, trauma, or death of a loved one. Positive experiences such as getting married, having a baby, or winning the lottery can also affect depression.

ECT - Electro-convulsive Therapy otherwise known as “Shock Therapy” is used for very severe depression that is particularly resistant to other treatments. An intense electric shock or maybe shocks are delivered to the body that creates a seizure. This process is thought to release chemicals in the brain that are related to mood. Memory loss and/or movement disorders can result from these treatments.

There is hope however, for depression sufferers. Newer medications, procedures and counseling techniques are being discovered all the time. If you feel you are depressed and it is lasting too long, seek the advice of your physician. Together you can determine if you are indeed depressed and what course of treatment to take.
