Breast Augmentation: Which Incision is Right for You?

Files under Health and Fitness | Posted by admin

In 2004 breast augmentation was one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. A couple of the reasons so many women choose to have a breast augmentation procedure performed are to improve their overall image and build self-confidence.

Incision Points:

In the past, one of the downsides of breast augmentation surgery was the possibility of having visible scars once the procedure was complete. Now, plastic surgeons like Dr. Mandell-Brown in Cincinnati, Ohio can perform breast augmentation procedures with nearly invisible incisions.

Your plastic surgeon will discuss with you about the different places an incision can be made for a breast augmentation procedure. At the moment, there are four different incision points that the plastic surgeon can choose: areola, inframammary fold, transaxillary (armpit), and TUBA (umbilical). Each of these incision points is chosen to hide any scarring as much as possible.

The areola incision is made where the light skin of the breast and the dark skin around the nipple meet. This incision allows the plastic surgeon to work right next to the area where the implant will be placed. Also, the plastic surgeon can place the implant anywhere from this location.

The inframammary fold incision is placed in the crease where the breast meets the ribcage. This incision point also allows the plastic surgeon to place the implant anywhere. One of the advantages of this incision point is that if there are any corrections that need to be made after the surgery, the doctor can use the same incision point.

One of the more popular choices for incision points is the transaxillary crease. This method places the incision in the crease of the armpit. This method provides a scarless breast because the incision is very small and the armpit hides any scars. Since the incision point is farther away from the implant area, some doctors choose to use an endoscope to aid in the procedure. Implants can be placed over, partially under, or completely under the muscle through this incision point.

The transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) method was first performed in 1991. This method places the incision and hides any resulting scars in the belly button. During this method of breast augmentation, the doctor will make an incision in the belly button and use an endoscope to aid in the placement of the implant. The TUBA method can place implants over the muscle or partially under the muscle. Also, it is said the since the incision point is further away from the breast, there is less postoperative discomfort and a faster recovery time.

To get more information about having a breast augmentation procedure performed, schedule an initial consultation with a plastic surgeon near you. During your initial consultation, a good plastic surgeon like Dr. Mandell-Brown in Cincinnati, OH, will inform you about the incisions and placements they are most comfortable with. They will also discuss with you about what procedure will give you the results you want.
